Lap-Band Surgery Saved Her Life

I hadn’t seen her in a year – but the first thing she did was give me a hug and thanked me for saving her life.

“I just put the lap-band in you, you did the real work,” I said.

“No, doctor, you don’t understand.”

She had lost 110 pounds since she had the lapband surgery in Phoenix. Then, a year ago she felt a lump in her breast. It was cancer.

“I would have never felt that lump when I weighed 110 pounds more. That cancer would have grown and grown.”

Thankfully she is doing well now, the cancer removed, therapy done.  There are a lot of benefits of weight loss surgery, and sometimes weight loss surgery can  mean saving a life.

Weight Loss Surgery: Success Depends on Follow Up

Nearly half of the people who participate in weight loss programs drop-out before completion, according to a new study published in the Canadian Journal of Surgery. In one particular weight-loss program, 43 percent of the participants dropped out, some of which were weight loss surgery patients. For the study, researchers assessed 1,205 participants in the program, 318 of whom had received bariatric surgery. The program lasted one year, and was extended to two years for surgery patients. The drop-out rate among non-surgery participants was 56 percent, while only 12 percent of surgery patients dropped out before shedding the desired amount of weight. The results are similar to those found in other weight-loss programs.

Emotional Eating: The Enemy of Weight Loss

The lapband does not fit well around the brain, and the lapband isn’t meant to. But the lap-band does give you an opportunity to reflect on what you eat. The lapband gives you a tool that allows you to limit the amount of food you can eat, so you can use this tool to retrain yourself about portion sizes, as well as think about the food you are eating.

This is called “mindful eating,” or “reflective eating.” The band gives you the opportunity to consider what and why you are eating the food in front of you. Like crossing the street, “stop, look, and listen,” is another way to consider “mindful eating.” In other words, with the lapband, you need to eat slowly; your new mantra should be — slow, small, and easy.

What It Takes to Lose: 5 Years After Weight Loss Surgery

Wanting to lose weight is not the same thing as being willing to do what it takes. Lap-Band surgery is a tool, it is not the brain – it is just a weight loss tool.  No matter which tool for weight loss surgery you use, if you expect that the operation will do the work for you, then you will not be successful. This is especially true for Lapband patients.

No weight loss surgery will tell you what to eat, how much to eat, and how to eat. Sometimes the surgery will stop you, make you feel uncomfortable, but in the long-run these are your decisions.  People who want the operation to do the work for them will fail.

It Doesn’t Work if You Stay the Same

Funny thing about lapband weight loss- there is a word in there that people sometimes don’t like, “loss.”  Weight loss means that you will have to change things, that what is familiar and comfortable may be killing you.

Are you willing to change what you eat? Are you willing to measure your food, and not rely on your eyes? Are you willing to try new recipes, new restaurants, new ways to cook? Are you willing to slow down when you eat? Are you willing to plan your menus and not live by the minute? Are you willing to give up being a “victim” and instead of blaming weight on things that are not in your control to take control of the one thing you have- what you eat?

What do you lose when you undergo a LAP-BAND and have weight loss? You have to buy some new clothes – and people might pay more attention to you – so you lose some old clothes that never looked good, and cost more than they should. It means you lose the taste for food that had too much grease, too much artificial sweeteners in it, and too many calories- and you learn to eat some great food that will be used for fuel and not for fat.
